Marco Polo's back story is palpable onboard and will be of particular appeal to ship buffs and historians. Its ex-U. Put simply, Marco Polo is about the basics of cruising: going to interesting places in comfortably well-worn surroundings in the company of your peers.

In this day and age, where every ship seems to be a gleaming new mega-liner or an ultra-luxury "yacht" with fares so high they make your eyes water, the number of ships that can offer this kind of cosy and familiar feel at this price point is shrinking fast.

In short, Marco Polo is a superb choice for anyone wanting a traditionally British, adult-only cruise experience aboard a real ocean liner at a reasonable price, and without an ounce of flash or pretence.

Under its current ownership, the demographics for passengers aboard the Marco Polo skew heavily towards those from the U.

The ship does not appeal to many families, though couples and singles of a wide range of ages do travel onboard. The average age is around With the types of prices on offer for a Marco Polo cruise, passengers are fairly evenly divided between repeat passengers and experienced cruisers who are cruising based on convenience and economy.

New-to-cruise passengers are quite welcome and will find themselves amongst an easygoing and familiar crowd. During the day, dress is casual but never sloppy; pool wear is seen around the pool but nowhere else.

Despite the categories of informal, casual and formal, at night, the ship adheres to a more traditional smart casual, semi-formal and formal definitions: Informal is largely ignored in the evenings, and even casual means "smart casual" with T-shirts, shorts and jeans frowned upon.

Dress code compliance is universal; this is not a ship for those who refuse to dress up. Facebook Pinterest Twitter. Marco Polo.

The elevator was out of service at least 7 different days so we had to use the stairs to go up and down. Do not purchase it - you will be wasting your money.

We did not have any live TV for 8. This is a very old ship and the company does not appear willing to upgrade internet technology or pay for satellite TV.

We felt extremely disconnected from family and had great difficulty rebooking our flight when we arrived back 2 days early due to COVID Read Less.

Sail Date January Helpful 9. This is cruising at the very bottom of the market. My wife and I are experienced cruisers with over one thousand sea days.

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary with St Helena and Suez canal top of our list of "to do's".

First impressions of the ship, cabins First impressions of the ship, cabins and staff and crew were mediocre at best. As time progressed on this 78 day trip we downgraded that initial impression.

The ship is old and it shows with outdated fixture and fittings. There is a good amount of open deck for the sun worshipers but as the majority is spread over the rear area be prepared to be covered in unburnt fuel particulate and deafened by exhaust fans.

Also the starboard area on each open deck is given over to smokers. Although as we experienced they do tend to spread out so that everybody got to share their smoke.

Furnishings are worn, cheap and often uncomfortable and the plastic plants scattered around the common areas do not add to the overall ambiance.

We had a premium double cabin with double window. This is just one grade below a suit. On any other cruise line it would have been a standard outside.

They have no refrigerator and are not spacious. There was however sufficient storage available. The air con was a joke.

Leaving the UK in January and there was no heat in the cabin. As we hit the tropics it warmed up but again the aircon struggled to keep the temperature down.

The TV was basic and the majority of the voyage no Satellite was available. Our cabin steward was hard working and did a good job despite the leaking windows with water running down the wall in the rain or when the window cleaning sprays were used.

The bathroom extractor fan only working intermittently. We took breakfast mostly in the MDR which was on the whole good and well presented.

Lunch location varied between the MDR and the buffet. The buffet was often crowded and whilst it was possible to get ones meal and go outside we tended not to due to the cigarette smoke.

The food served was basic works canteen stuffas was the buffet. In both locations it was difficult and time consuming to get a drink from the bar, Evening meal in the two sitting MDR was in the main very poor.

Much of the basic ingredients were of poor quality and not correctly cooked. To hide this, most main courses were smothered in sauces.

Often the same sauce was used for both meat and fish!! We discovered that Vegetarian curries were reasonable so we often had those or a baked potato for our evening meal.

Even the motorway service areas have upped there standards above this. Not once did we have steak or beef wellington on formal nights.

Lobster could be had for a much hyped additional fee. I have never been on a cruise previously where so many frozen and chilled food was used.

The entertainment was good but the few guest acts were not even Working Mens Club standard. The singers and dancers who also doubled up as day time quiz masters and competition hosts worked hard.

One day time guest speaker was excellent, the remainder very poor in both content of topic and presentation. At the start I said this cruise was chosen for the itinerary.

St Helena was the first port of call that was missed. An ex Naval engineer informed us that taking the cruising speed of the ship and the distances involved the Captain could never have made the port in time.

The missed ports eventually became such an embarrassment that we were returned two days of our cruise cost as OBC. At no time did we get the feeling the senior offices and the senior hotel management had control over their respective departments.

Shore excursions were in the main at lower prices than normal but again the quality was not the best.

You get what you pay for! The last 14 days of the cruise was marred by the Corona virus which was obviously beyond the cruise lines control.

After leaving Jordan we made our way through the Suez canal and did not touch land again until dis embarcation in the UK.

This cruise was not particularly cheap but the overall impression was of a company providing a service on the cheap.

We feel we wasted our money and vacation time. Helpful 1. Should go in to retirement. From the large warehouse for embarkment in Bristol thoughts of cheap and cheerful came in to my head.

On board there was a smell of diesel in the lower decks. Cabin was clean but as the ship is 55 years old could not expect much.

Biggest problem was the trip hazards in the door ways, raised lips on every doorway and uneven floors, on the public toilets two raised edges caught a lot of people out.

They had to call the helicopter out twice, and by the end of the cruise many were sporting arm and foot injury's due to falls. Dining was in two times, and various size tables from two to ten seats.

Food was good and plenty of choice with just over the hour from start to finish. This allowed time to get to the theatre to watch the show at 8pm.

The biggest problem I had was the lack of time in the ports. Would arrive at 8am and leave at 1. By the time you had breakfast it only gave a couple of hours to see the place.

Cobh was a complete waste and was only to drop people off as arrive 6am and leave at By the time you paid for car park then tips and drink package you could of gone on a much better cruise line for the same cost.

Would I go back on to this ship no but spoke to many that have been on a few times because of its size. Sail Date December Helpful 6. Stellaroger 1 Review Written.

Some suggested those who travel on Cunard are for want of a word 'snobs'. Well really get a life and travel better. We all deserve it.

The staff need training on how to serve politely. All staff rushed us, at breakfast we were split up and made t o sit away from each other four in our group This ship still sails well good luck to anyone who books this terrible vessel.

More negative comments that positive ones why then hasn't the company done something about it. Do they read these reviews Read Less.

Michelle 1 Review Written. Bug onboard. This was the Iceland and the Northern lights cruise also calling at Faroe and Orkney islands.

We were on the Marco Polo in a superior We were on the Marco Polo in a superior outside cabin The ship is old and tatty but small enough to feel friendly and in our opinion, more personal than the huge cruise ships.

This was a cruise of 2 halves, great shore experiences vs fairly terrible on board experience some admittedly not CMV's fault.

We hit some pretty awful weather force 9 gales I overheard , which on a ship with people already sick more about that later was not pleasant but obviously no ones fault.

Even hardened cruisers were saying they were the worse conditions they had ever experienced. The time spent on shore was wonderful.

We were able to do extra little things like feeding the iceland ponies and did not feel at all rushed , we even had some time at the end so Ragnor took us to see the cathedral and the pearl in the city.

Definately recommended. We hired a car on Orkney which was easy to arrange, Avis car hire place was next to where the shuttle bus dropped us in town.

However unfortunately our time on Orkney was cut short by 3 hours out of the planned 8 hours because our ship was held in quarantine for 3 hours due to the diahorrea and vomiting bug which had plagued our ship for approx half of our cruise.

The bug meant that all public areas were closed apart from one restaurant the buffet was closed and cancelled to limit infection spreading and the bars.

This severely limited what we could do particularly on sea days. Passengers started suffering with diahorrea and vomiting approx 7 days into the cruise and it was spreading, of course these things happen on cruises, we all.

Our cruise effectively ended with the outbreak and the remaining 5 days became an exercise in managing us with little regard to the fact that there were many trying to enjoy their holiday.

The staff in general were friendly and helpful but even some of those were getting snappy and stretched towards the end of the Cruise.

The management were nowhere to be seen. By the last few days we had the impression we were now just an inconvenience to CMV who just wanted us to stay out of the way so they could clean all public areas ready for the next cruise.

So for a large proportion of our cruise there was no gym, hot tub, pool, spa, burger bar, craft classes, shops, buffet restaurant, library or card room.

There was no attempt to reopen anything after it had been cleaned presumably to save them cleaning again before the next cruise and the whole atmosphere became very unpleasant.

There was very little in the way of information from our Captain who just occasionally made a dour announcement giving us information about our whereabouts that was available on the tv channel anyway, he sounded bored and lacked any humour which could have been helpful given the circumstances.

However he kept the ship safe which is his job. The worse thing in our opinion was that at no point was there any acknowledgement of the distress we were experiencing, it was quite bizarre.

All we received was a letter through the door explaining that there was a virus on board. I was ill for 2 days and my husband and I basically had to fend for ourselves paying for room service as I wasn't ill enough to qualify for free room service!

There were a few shining lights within the staff, for us it was our extremely hard working cabin cleaner Min Zaw who frankly deserves a medal, Colin our waiter had a sense of humour and the drinks waiter Tun in the globe bar always had a smile and a laugh.

The food was at best mediocre, on par with a 3 star all inclusive hotel but wine on the vip package was nice and plentiful.

Unfortunately this whole experience has put us off cruising at least for the foreseeable future and we would certainly never use CMV again.

I wrote to CMV but only received a standard letter which did not address any of my concerns and just quoted policy at me — no apology for the way things were handled.

In summary it wasn't the fact we were unlucky enough to experience a bug on board a cruise ship but rather how it was handled by CMV.

We work too hard for our holidays so Never again!!! Bradleyshel 1 Review Written. Bristol to Cork. An excellent mini cruise.

The whole experience we found to be excellent. Embarkation and disembarkation was well organised and everything went to plan.

The cabin ours was inside on deck 7 was all we needed. The beds were comfortable there was plenty of room, the tv had entertainment on and also plenty of info about the cruise as it proceeded.

The staff were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. They were kind, courteous and very respectful and considering some of the pompous, arrogant passengers we witnessed they had to deal with we admire them for keeping their cool and composure.

Indeed the one disadvantage was some of the fellow passengers. Yes we did meet some lovely people but they also had the same opinion that we had that some people are never satisfied and really think that they are far superior than they really are.

Some of the complaints we heard were quite frankly pathetic. If some passengers were used to been pampered on Cunard then they should go back there!!

So going back to our experience the food was excellent. You have 2 options the Waldorf restaurant and the buffet lounge. The menus were the same but the Waldorf was waiter service.

We ate breakfast and lunch in the buffet and dinner in the Waldorf. I would recommend to dine for dinner in the Waldorf.

If you can tolerate your fellow passengers you are dining with the food and service was 5 star.

Fantastic presentation and superb quality. There was plenty of entertainment on the ship for all concerned, the gym and sauna were excellent and we also had a tour of the bridge where we found the crew to be informative, friendly and helpful.

We did 6 excursions all very well organised and that was a theme through the entire cruise excellent organisation.

Yes the ship looks a bit tired in certain areas but generally for us it was a touch of luxury. Sail Date October Helpful Disappointed travellers.

The only problem is being a small ship it gets thrown around alot more when the seas are rough. We have only been on larger ships, max passengers and in areas like the Med or Caribean which tend to be smoother.

Our biggest problem was from the poor service received. Try for a pre-dinner drink in the Captians Bar and the average wait was 30 minutes.

In the buffet you would never see a smile from the crew. One can only assume the management were extremely hard on them.

The Waldorf restaurant was okay and the food was reasonable, but I had fish most days which was fine but it was always served the same.

For example, Montreal, Quebec and Sydney. The Marco Polo cruise was for 30 days to Canada. My dining experience in the buffet found a variety of cooked food.

Chicken, fish, and vegetarian. Also salads. The Waldorf restaurant provides a daily set menu to choose from.

Two or three starters, main meals, and desserts. Alcohol has to be paid for as extra expenses. Activities such as, comedy drama and singing was pleasant entertainment.

The service by staff in general was basic. The Scotts bar, had 1 good bartender who served nice cocktails.

The cabin i stayed in was a standard room. Two single beds, a cabinet with drawers, a double wardrobe and one chair.

A small shower room. With basic soap and shampoo with a unpleasant smell. Towels were changed by request. Sail Date September Eurovisionfan 9 Reviews Written.

Marco Polo's final trip to Canada. Our last time on the Marco Polo was in , our second cruise, after our first on NCL with a butler and a concierge and lots of fancy extras.

On arrival, the new parking facilities at Tilbury made things much easier. As we went towards check in, we were greeted by Sheena, a member of staff who recognised us from — she was also there to wish us a safe journey home when we got back!

Check in took no time, and within minutes, we were in our cabin. We really like CMV, and yes, there are things they could do better — information about the ports could have maps, there could be more mugs available and a couple of the waiting staff might be a little more courteous at times that said, our waiter, Pritish, was fantastic.

Sometimes, perhaps a little more attention could be paid to detail. Getting the time zone wrong was a good example, but it does add to the quirkiness of CMV and probably why we rate it so highly.

It was very big and exceedingly well situated. It had more than ample storage facilities with a large dressing table and three wardrobes.

And very usefully, lots of wall hooks for coats and dressing gowns that we brought with. One of the dressing gowns came in particularly useful to block out the light from under the door.

The hold rails in the bathroom came in very useful when we were taking a shower in rough seas. With so many sea days, we were delighted with the daytime activities, especially the creative writing classes by Chrissie — and the drama classes with Harry and Emma.

Given that our previous Marco Polo Cruise Director was the amazing Richard Sykes, Josh had a lot to live upto and he was a really great Cruise Director — a very talented showman with a great future.

The standout moment for us was when he unexpectedly appeared during our drama class in his costume for the cocktail competition.

At that moment, it confirmed we were in great hands! The nightly entertainment was mainly very good, although we thought the comedians were rather past their best before date.

At nearly 60, I really struggled with some subjects, such as putting sixpences and aspirins in stocking suspenders that broke in the wash.

Thankfully some other passengers explained it to us. Our waiter, Pritish, was absolutely brilliant and dealt with our dietary requirements superbly.

Portions were huge and our only complaint was that the food was too nice so we ate too much! A great little cruise ship. We have travelled on many cruise lines We tried CMV as we were considering a world cruise.

And we are very pleased we did The price does not And we are very pleased we did The price does not reflect the quality of food or cabin on board.

We had better meals in the restaurant than we had on HAL or Celebrity. You do dress for dinner which we were very happy with.

The cabins are dated but larger than the average because the ship is old. The bathrooms are considerably bigger than a modern cruise ship.

All of the staff were excellent. And the entertainment was really good in comparison to many of the major cruise lines. Drinks on board were FAR cheaper than any other cruise line we have been on too.

This is an older cruise ship but still has all the facilities we required The deck space is generous which is a reflection of a proper old fashioned ship and not the monsters of RCL So all in all, we are delighted with CVM and looking forward to our 78 day epic around Africa and Asia Read Less.

However it was put in the cabin with a card ,nice gesture!. The food was excellent six course dinners with a great variety of food from Beef wellington To salmon.

Breakfast loads of cereal, fruits ,yoghurt s meats ,cheeses ,porridge ,bacon bit hard sausages ,beans ,hash browns and one morning black pudding which was very tasty!

Another morning pancakes ,the chef was on doing the omelette with different fillings plus fried eggs. Lunch three course ,even fish and chips with mushy peas one day ,shepherds pie another.

We chose the dining room as the self service was always very busy! Different theme every night ,the guest comedian on two nights well what can I say!

There were quizzes and games laid on by the crew which were fun And got you chatting to your fellow passengers. In all a very pleasant cruise up the Norwegian Fjordland third cruise but first on a small ship And nice it started from rosyth saved trailing to south.

One final point perhaps they could give the windows a clean now and again they were very dirty when looking out having a relaxing drink Took a while to disembark 2hrs after arriving at port.

The End! Janesime 3 Reviews Written. Stunning place to visit Weather was fantastic Ship, very tired needs to retire as well do some staff No regrets going.

Without any cocktails. Beer ,wine ,orange juice! Helpful 3. Shona Scotland 1 Review Written. Our first and last cruise, very disappointing especially the food which aims for quantity rather than quality.

Food was very repetitive, poor choice and poor quality, for example Kraft cheese slices sometimes the only cheese on offer!!

Staff not friendly, service was always slow. You've already paid your tips so I guess they don't care. In the buffet restaurant although the staff cleared the tables between diners they never wiped them so if you came late you had a dirty table.

Evening entertainment was disappointing. Repetitive song and dance shows, the, best entertainment was the comedian who was actually OK.

There was constant maintenance work being carried out which meant stairs up to upper decks were often closed off. They offer WiFi which doesn't actually work, so what's the point Excursions were very expensive and we heard people on the one excursion we did saying they had been to the same place 2 days running.

Overall a bad experience, don't recommend it and wouldn't return Read Less. Abeddie 1 Review Written. Marco Polo Norwegian Fjords.

The Norwegian Fjords were stunning and the weather was spectacular, the cruise experience not so much. The ship while kept clean is in need of a refurb.

The service in the bars and for coffee is excruciating slow. We waited for over and hour in the captains lounge just to get a coffee, and had to chase it 3 times before we got 2 cups Very frustrating and you had to wait for waiter service, no other option.

The crew were not easy to engage with, and some were downright rude. Very happy to talk and laugh between themselves, but as the customers were felt like an inconvenience.

Breakfast was a farce most mornings, and we tried different times, food had run out leading to long queues, no toast, not even mugs to get tea and coffee, just a joke, and set the day off on the wrong note every morning.

Scots bar was closed one evening for a staff party! But the ship was heading to Newcastle when we came home then to tilbury with perhaps very few passengers, could the staff party have been then?

Not a pleasant trip, and many of our travellers we ate with in the evening had complained on board about the service.

Good food and service ok at the evening dinner. Not what we were looking forward to on the cruise.

To let you understand how disappointed we were in 40 years of travel and holidays, this is the 1st time we have complained.

Think twice before you book Helpful 5. Shona 1 Review Written. Disorganised cruise on a dated ship.

A TA told us about overnight cruises where the ship is repositioned and you can stay and received food and entertainment at a reasonable price.

We went from Newcastle to Rosyth Edinburgh. We had an outside cabin that was small and dated. We were told check-in was pm, when we got to our room we had a message to say we had to be on the 6pm dinner sitting.

If we'd been on the later sitting we could have used the health facilites and they'd have made some money!

We got there as quick as we could and then had trouble getting served ship was full. Late on during our meal we were told 3 times to hurry up as they wanted to prepare for the next sitting!

Food apart from the tenderloin was very average. Went to the cabaret which had a delayed start but we didn't know how long the delay would be and the band were sat around texting.

Show was OK but short. DJ and dancing was very good. You have to vacate your room by am and we were told we would not disembark until am.
